A roof change starts with the room.
Think about what you want to improve before choosing a finish. Heat, glare, noise and the amount of light all have different influences; a roof choice needs to sit within a complete plan for the space.
The structure underneath
Existing frames, walls and foundations need to be suitable for the proposed roof. A replacement system must be considered as part of the whole conservatory rather than assumed to fit any existing structure.
Daylight and outlook
A more solid roof changes the balance of light. Discuss rooflights or glazed areas where available, including the effect on the adjoining room and the view from outside.
Comfort and ventilation
Insulation, glazing, shading and ventilation work together. Explain how the room feels now and how you want to use it, so the options can be compared against your priorities.
Make the scope clear from the start.
Ask what is included for the roof structure, external covering, internal ceiling finish, rooflights and connections to the house. Electrical changes, decoration, guttering and removal of the old roof should also be discussed rather than assumed. The quotation needs to describe the proposed system and the work around it.
A conservatory roof replacement can have structural and building-regulation implications. Establish the approval requirements before starting. The Planning Portal roof-replacement guidance explains why these checks matter.
Your questions, answered.
Practical answers to help you plan the next step.
Can every conservatory take a tiled roof?
No suitability should be assumed. The existing structure and the proposed roof system need to be assessed together, including how loads are supported and what approvals apply.
Will changing the roof make the room darker?
The amount and distribution of daylight can change, particularly with a more solid design. Compare rooflight and glazing arrangements where available and consider the adjoining room too.
Will a replacement roof solve every comfort problem?
Comfort also depends on the remaining glazing, orientation, shading, ventilation and heating arrangements. Discuss the whole room and avoid relying on a guaranteed temperature claim.
